Lois Slate Hammer

Lois Slate Hammer, 84, of Venice, Fla., died Jan. 16, 2011.

She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, on Oct. 4, 1926, to Ora George and Gladys Marie Miller Slate.

She earned a Masterís degree in education and also in counseling/guidance. She taught elementary school with a specialty in gifted education in Illinois, California, Arkansas, and Florida.

Mrs. Hammer was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Retired Teachers Association, and the American Association of University Women.

While retired in Venice, she was involved with the Literacy Guild, the Womenís Resource Center, and Unity Church of Venice.

She was excited to share with the world anything and everything she thought would help someone.

Surviving family members include her daughter, Donna Day, of Venice; grandchildren, Christian Hammer (wife: Kate) and Kirsten Remsen (husband: Joe); and great-grandchildren, Noah and Jonah Hammer.

She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Floyd Slate; a sister, Rosemary Blickenstaff; and her beloved, John Campbell.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Unity Church of Venice.
